Report on “Your Right to Health Insurance” Open Mic Segment

During today’s edition of the Seesay Radio Reporting Program, we hosted an engaging open mic segment on “Your Right to Health Insurance.” The segment provided listeners with an opportunity to call in and share their concerns, questions, and experiences related to health insurance.

One of the callers, Jepthah from Amakohia, a student, explained that he has a friend who urgently needs surgery and is looking for quick access to health insurance coverage to help subsidize the medical costs. In response, the program anchor, Blessing Iriaka, clarified that health insurance enrollment and activation may take some time, sometimes up to 60 days or more depending on the scheme.

She emphasized that this is why individuals are encouraged to enroll in a health insurance plan before illness or medical emergencies arise.

Building on this discussion, the Advocacy Officer highlighted the importance of proactive enrollment, stressing that waiting until one becomes ill before seeking health insurance coverage is not advisable. The public was encouraged to view health insurance as a preventive financial protection measure rather than an emergency solution.

Another caller inquired about where he could access health insurance services closest to his location. The anchor assured him that the necessary information would be communicated to him to enable him access suitable health insurance options within his area.

As the program drew to a close, the team reiterated the importance of health insurance and encouraged all Nigerians to enroll in a suitable health insurance scheme. Listeners were reminded that health insurance helps reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses, improves access to quality healthcare services, and can contribute significantly to reducing preventable deaths resulting from financial barriers to healthcare.

The episode served as an important platform for public education and engagement, reinforcing the message that health insurance is a vital tool for achieving better health outcomes and financial protection for individuals and families.
